Foreshortenings and Ivy in Rome

My first post in English

Green, red and gold are the colours of Rome during the entire year. A rare gift. It is a Byzantine city, which surprises you suddenly with amazing foreshortenings and point of views always new and unexpected. Could you imagine to find the warmth of the ancient marble and the perfection of the Corinthian capitals just turning a corner?

The flowers at the windows and the smooth branches by green ivy make a stroll in Rione Monti a pleasant way to wander with the eyes looking for the details colourful and brightened by the Roman sun.

Rome isn’t only light, but shadows shaped by the creepers which hug the walls and climb the wires of the public streetlights, from a building to the other one at the other side. Through the curtains heavy by the plants you can glance at the stunning scenery of the eternal city, as if you were in a theatre under the sky.

A spot of bright purple is the jewel of the crown for the Colosseum walking by chance on one of the several paths in the Opium Hill Garden. I like wandering here before the sunset, when the lights begin going down, the first shadows rise and the air is mild.

The ivy is red like wine on this building in the Coppedé area, one of the most bizarre, fantasious and fairy-tale neighbourhood in Rome. The district mixes up Liberty style, Gothic suggestions and Tuscan turrets.

A green twig is just an excuse to quote the Mascherone fountain, behind the wall of the Farnese Palace in Via Giulia. From the Mascherone (or Big Mask) flows the water that, unlike the major part of the roman fountains – included the nasoni, of course – is not drinkable.
